According to UN Women, in 2023, an average of 140 women and girls were killed daily by intimate partners or family members, totaling approximately 51,100 deaths globally. Additionally, around one in three women worldwide has experienced physical or sexual violence.
The importance of International Women’s Day 2025 lies in actively resisting the growing global assault on gender justice, reproductive rights, and the safety of women, girls, and gender-diverse people. The rollback of hard-won freedoms—driven by leaders like President Trump—has had devastating consequences worldwide, from increased gender-based violence to restrictions on reproductive healthcare. Amnesty International calls on governments to strengthen protections, decriminalize sexual and reproductive rights, and recognize gender apartheid as a crime under international law.
