MUNICIPALITY OF RETHYMNON CARETTA CARETTA: LIVING TOGETHER IN HARMONY

With the main slogan “Living together in harmony”, the Municipality of Rethymnon realised, from June to October 2023, an awareness raising programme about the presence of Caretta caretta on the northern beach of Rethymno. Sympraxis undertook the communication services on the behalf of the Municipality, with the main objective of highlighting the protection of the sea turtle. Within the project’s framework, the communication strategy was developed including targeting, outline of actions, points of main interest, target audience, as well as the action plan distributed over the duration of the project. At the same time, promotion and awareness raising material was created, including: information boards with information on the biology and marine habitats of the species, marking of protection cages, and information brochures in 5 languages. Also, two videos were created to publicise and promote the information in the information areas, with the first video referring to the miracle of spawning that takes place in Rethymnon and the second recording in an understandable and comprehensible way the instructions given to the visitors of the spawning beaches. As part of the awareness raising programme, ARCHELON, with the support of volunteers, carried out a series of actions with informative projections in hotels and other locations, during which it is estimated that more than 4,000 people, permanent residents, visitors and tourists of the area, were informed.
