The 6th year of Dixan’s environmental programme “Clean Thoroughly. Clean at the Source” was completed, with Sympraxis undertaking the planning, organisation and implementation of the volunteer actions. For one more year, the volunteer cleanups have made their mark, as 320 volunteers removed approximately 9 tons of waste and 650 kg of plastic, enhancing environmental awareness. The last three activities focused on areas particularly burdened by waste. In September, the cleanup at Lombarda beach was implemented with the contribution of the Progressive Cultural Association of Agia Marina and the volunteering employees of Henkel Hellas, in collaboration with Save your Hood, collecting 630 kg of waste and microplastics that would have ended up in the sea. In October, the Lycée Léonin of Nea Smyrni and volunteering employees of Henkel Hellas, in collaboration with Save your Hood, cleaned the Pikrodafni Stream, near Paleo Faliro, removing 540 kg of waste, of which 250 kg were plastic. The programme focuses on the Pikrodafni Stream for the second time, because it is the last stream in southern Attica that remains open and has rich biodiversity. The accumulation of bulky waste in urban streams impedes the flow of water, increasing the risk of flooding; for this reason, the programme prioritises their cleaning. The last volunteer clean-up action took place in November, at the Prophet Daniel Stream, in the area of Votanikos. This particular stream has suffered a sad degradation, as it has been transformed into an informal landfill. Along its length we find bulky objects, construction materials, plastics, packaging materials, cables, electrical devices, etc. The volunteering employees of Henkel Hellas, together with Save your Hood, managed to remove more than 800 kg of waste from the stream. The programme will continue with consistency and commitment, for a cleaner environment.
